Got to play in the B.E.T.A. for #Fallout76 tonight. So much fun! Despite other players running around, it felt very comfortable as a single-player experience. I'd love to be able to team up with friends, but I know I'll be able to have a great time playing on my own, too.
Huge thank you to Amy J Bell for taking care of everything so I could nerd out until I had to leave for work.
Anyone who wants to party up when the official release drops, hit me up so we can plan!
Overall impression, as I said, was that it's a lot of fun. The crafting system is very similar to Fallout 4, with the addition (return?) Of weapon condition from 3. Workshops and crafting benches were easy to find, and I very quickly had a wide range of weapons available. I was even able to modify a gun into a sniper rifle before level 4.
I didn't spend too much time messing with the C.A.M.P. system, which is how you create your base, but even in the limited time I did spend in it, I was able to get some basics set up, including a Stash (which I think, but haven't confirmed, gives me access to my stuff from any other Stash I find in the world), a campfire, and an armor workbench.
Combat is definitely balanced to the easier side, although since I usually play 4 on Very Hard or Survival difficulty, that may be a perception thing.
I do recommend focusing on melee as a first option at the beginning, as, while ammo is available, V.A.T.S. doesn't slow combat down the way it did in earlier games, and you need the Concentrated Fire perk (under Perception) to use it to target specific body parts. I like melee in general, though, so people who like to run and gun will be satisfied. Though, do be aware of your ammo, of course.
I'm not a fan of the quick-tab wheel for items. I understand the concept, but I was very comfortable with the set-up from Fallout 4, and didn't think it was really necessary to change it. I'm sure I'll adapt, but the game didn't really explain how it works, and I haven't figured out if there's a way to customize where individual items go on the wheel. I also don't like how much of the screen it occupies while switching items. In an unpausable game, that's a major handicap.
Same thing with the emote wheel. You're kind of thrown into the mix in that and expected to figure it out. It's not exactly complicated, and I'm sure people with more online having experience than me would pick it up faster, but still, not as good as it could have been.
I also need to figure out local chat. There was another player who tried to talk to me, and I had assumed the Kinect for my Xbox would pick up my dialogue, but apparently it didn't. I'll try headphones connected to my controller next, I'm pretty sure that work. Definitely an issue on my end, rather than with the game, though. Just as well, since I had to yell at the kids right at that moment, and I don't think it would have enhanced anyone's having experience.
